Windows Phone 7 Marketplace crosses the 5000 app milestone

In less than two months, Windows 7 Phone Marketplace collected over 5,000 apps.

The Microsoft Windows Marketplace for Mobile (aka Windows 7 Phone Market Place) has unofficially passed the 5000 apps, according to recent statistics.

To put that in perspective, there are as many apps as Palm's WebOS, a platform that has been out since June 2009. As any App Store, there are some less than great apps, but we have not seen an abundance of crap apps.

There are over 1,000 applications submitted during the last 13 days! The market place is 72% paid apps and only 28% free programs, 23% of all games, 15% Tools & Utilities and 10% of Entertainment apps.

It tells us that the 5000 mark is a very real number, and that means that developers embracing Windows Phone 7.Not a bad way to end 2010 as we look forwards to news from Microsoft next week at CES.

The average price of a paid app is $ 1.51.

Nokia rumored to release Windows Phone 7 smartphones in 2011 Nokia rumored to release Windows Phone 7 smartphones in 2011 NoMatchingStoryFound

Nokia is reportedly in talks with Microsoft for using Windows phone on its future devices.

And this is only a few weeks after that Andy Rubin from Google came out of his hope that Nokia would be to switch to Android sooner rather than later.

The news appeared in an article by Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review, which has a strong reputation for predicting this kind of thing.

The site has it that it was Nokia's newly installed chief executive, Stephen Elop (ex-Microsoft) that has held meetings with his former company prepare mains of Windows 7 for telephone handsets, which will apparently be released in 2 quarter of 2011. The units will be sold under the brand name Nokia, the Nokia distribution channels and would sport Nokia typical features.

Slim chances for that to happen, though, because the first MeeGo phones are also expected in the second quarter of next year.

And let us not forget Nokia's bragging statements on the new Symbian and MeeGo that suggested confidence in the Finnish company's software strategy.

Could they have been just empty words? It is most impossible to imagine a company that revolutionized the telecommunications market, Microsoft provides free access to devices.

Another possibility is that this is only a temporary measure, to give Nokia more time on finishing the new Symbian and MeeGo.

Only time will tell whether Nokia will give up on their next two OS's in favour of Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone.

Nokia gave a short statement to the press, to strengthen its earlier decision to refuse to comment on any speculation.

Windows Phone 7 sold more than 1.5 million in six weeks

Microsoft is out with the first sales figures for Windows phone 7 and the results will surprise the skeptics (including me) that the sale is expected to be bleak.

Microsoft is finally ready to talk about numbers for its Windows 7 Phone platform.

The company just announced that more than 1.5 million phones were sold in the first six weeks, a solid development.

But the figures they have released needs a little more analysis than usual.

Achim Berg, Vise President of Business Development and Marketing for Windows Phones, says Microsoft News Centre site that mobile manufacturers sold more than 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks.

My colleague Mary Jo Foley has already picked up prominent figures that Microsoft wants to look at the headlines: More than 1.5 million Windows Phone 7s sold to date.

Berg also states that the sales figures met Microsoft's expectations, as you would expect him to say.

This figure comes from an interview with Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president for business and marketing for Windows Phones, published on the Microsoft News Center.

Microsoft has until now refused to release sales figures.

Here's the quote: Sales are ramping and our reputation is growing to offer users a unique experience and is as per our expectations - especially compared with other new platform introductions.

Initial anecdotal reports indicated a slow turnover, and Microsoft's silence only added to the sense that the phone was launched went bad.

With a new platform you need to look at a few things, first of all customer satisfaction.

The 1.5 million number is not a blowout success, but it is far from a failure, especially with the phone so far is available in a limited number of carriers, and not on Verizon or Sprint.

As I mentioned earlier, we have seen good response to the complete mobile experience.

Windows 7 Phone sales are still dwarfed by both Android and iPhone phones, of course.

Another is the phone manufacturer sales - phones are bought and filled with mobile operators and retailers on the way to customers.

Google says that about 300,000 Android devices are turned daily, for example.

We are delighted that mobile manufacturers sold more than 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks, which helps to build customer momentum and retail presence.

But it is to expect that the revamped Microsoft mobile platform would not immediately challenge either Android or iPhone.

Had this interview been conducted by an actual journalist, you might have seen a follow-up question here: How many of these phones have been activated by the customers? That is the real metric for market share from Google, for instance, now claims that it is enable 300,000 new Android devices a day, and that is to say that Microsoft is not sharing that number.

I have often said that Windows 7 Phone sales were tanking, and if Microsoft's sales figures are accurate, I was clearly wrong.

If these phones do not fly out of stores, so it could be a classic case of channel stuffing.

The respectable sales figures show that Microsoft may be able to regain a foothold in the mobile market, which is crucial for the company's future.

And that directly compares the Windows 7 Phone sales for the original iPhone is not so easy.

Mobile is where the growth is, and without being a player in the mobile market, Microsoft will be relegated to a slow-growth company.

Because Apple sold the first iPhone model directly to their customers, they did not have to worry about his channel.

I do not expect Windows Phone to challenge for supremacy Android or iPhone for second place.

Yet it is worth noting that it took 74 days for the original iPhone to hit 1 million units sold, back in 2007.

These sales figures, as solid as they are, do not indicate that Windows 7 Phone has caught fire in any way.

Still, I do not want to dismiss the numbers entirely, because they do represent a serious commitment on the part of carriers to buy and make and sell the phones.

But they show that Microsoft is clearly in mobile in the long term, and will be a competitor.

And a key part of Microsoft's strategy is to get these devices out into the world so that potential customers can try them out.

And competition is good for consumers, and the overall industry.

As Berg notes: We introduced a new platform with Windows 7 Phone, and when you do that it takes time to educate partners and consumers on what you deliver, and to create awareness and interest in the new offering.

So for anyone who cares about the future of mobile technology, sales figures are welcome news.

We're comfortable with where we are, and we are here for the long run; Phone Windows 7 is just the beginning.

Our opportunity is to make sure people get to play with a Windows phone.

Ultimately, Microsoft wants this storey to be about momentum.

Developers are building apps for the new platform, customers who try it love it, and-most importantly-it has a future.

Berg uses the long-term sentence twice in this press release: We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product.

We are in the race - it's not a sprint, but we are definitely gaining momentum and we are in it for the long run.

Indeed, the 1.5 million number of almost significant as an expression of trust with carriers around the world.

But we will not be able to judge whether that momentum has reached takeoff speed before Microsoft starts talking about activations.

Nokia Looking To Develop Windows Phone 7 Smartphones

Nokia is rumored to be in talks with Microsoft to launch a possible 7 Phone Windows-based smartphone during the Nokia brand - marks a huge change in attitude from the Finnish giant.

Nokia is rumored to be looking to develop a new mains of smart phones running Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone operating system.

Nokia is reported to have taken the initiative for talks.

The rumors come from Eldar Murtazin, who weekly op-ed in Mobile Review said that a newly formed Nokia's management had met with Microsoft last month to discuss possibilities for cooperation.

If talks with Microsoft are going, they can be misinterpreted as if the phone OS, but in fact be linked to existing alliances between the two companies, as it announced late last year to add more support for the Microsoft Office services in Nokia phones.

Nokia is currently struggling to retain its market share against competition from Google's Android, Apple's IOS and BlackBerry while you continue to use the Symbian operating system.

Nokia has repeatedly denied media reports that it may consider switching to Android OS, that it was satisfied with Symbian and Intel joint venture, MeeGo.

If the rumors are true, then it would mark Nokia's first attempt to adopt a different operating system in their smart phones.

But despite opening up Symbian to the open source community has not excited app developers in the same way as Google sponsored Android platform managed.

Nokia has effectively dismantled its once great Symbian development team in favor of expensive public relations campaigns, said Murtazin.

Together with Microsoft is a bad idea.

Nokia had a strong developer team, the company somehow decided to disband.

The proposed alliance shows the weakness of Nokia.

They look desperate and can not control the situation, he wrote.

Nokia and Microsoft discussing Windows Phone 7

We were shocked, as you might now, when we first heard about it.

September, rumors have surfaced again, as the Russian blogger Eldar Murtzain claim that Nokia will soon be adopting Windows Phone 7.In his weekly blog on the Mobile Review, Nokia Murtazin claims that front-man Stephen Elop has initiated talks with Microsoft, which is funny, considering he used to work for them.

As if Verizon's CDMA friendly iPhone was not shocking enough, Nokia is reported to be in talks with Microsoft.

According to the article, the two companies are not just talking about the implementation of Microsoft apps and technology exchange, they discuss creating an entire suite of Windows phone devices that can go under the name Nokia.

Both companies had closed door talks of working with Nokia-branded Windows 7 Phone devices.

Even if we find all this a little hard to believe, given Murtazin earlier hits, it does not sound so unbelievable as it did for a few months ago.

Eldar Murtazin, ex-Nokia fan and now an Android blogs, commented on Mobile Review that the negotiations took place last month between Nokia and Microsoft.

Also, given the decline in Nokia's home-made Symbian OS and MeeGo still kept under wraps-an agreement between Redmond and Espoo-based companies are no longer seems so distant.

Back in Septenber were rumors about Nokia is working with Windows Phone widespread, but the Finnish handset maker's refusal of such developments.

If indeed true, this technique can venture to see Microsoft's OS become the third largest in the world, behind Google's Android and Apple's IOS.

Nokia last month took responsibility for the Symbian platform development until after the Symbian Foundation, announced to make into a licensing body.

Nevertheless, we are not sure what good Nokia would get from the deal, although it might finally help them to make an impact on the U.S. market.

And earlier this month, shared Nokia China's senior manager Gunther Kottzieper, the iMic Presentation plans to introduce dual-core CPU savvy smartphones.

Would you like to see Windows 7 on Nokia Phone branded phones? Let us know in the comments below! [Source: IntoMobile].

And with the new scoop on the use of Microsoft's behind the door negotiations made it a bit interesting.

Murtazin reported that the Nokia-Microsoft talked about making a new line of Windows Phone to be sold under the Nokia brand and will have some typical Nokia features.

Quite possible that Nokia will work on dual-core CPU-based smart phone that runs Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone mobile OS.

Currently, Nokia is working with the development of Symbian and MeeGo mobile platforms.

Adding Windows Phone 7 would not only require more labor, but also dedicated resources to meet Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone standards.

No more details were shared on the same, making it clear that these negotiations may still be too early.

Nokia Microsoft partnership could be a simple indication of Google's Android's popularity.

Both companies are sort of kneeling down now to unite against Android, BlackBerry and IOS.

Just in case the talks between the two companies materialize, we hear news about the same at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 next month or Mobile World Parliament 2011 in February.

Phone recycling to hike with Windows Phone 7

Individuals may want to take part in the mobile phone recycling when they try to get rid of old equipment in advance of the release of the latest Windows Phone 7.According to T3, the second batch of products arriving in February, which gives people plenty of time to to trade in their existing mobile.

Microsoft made a long and costly to build up to the launch of Windows 7 Phone, and mostly we bought into it.

They are set to be presented at the Mobile World Congress, with Acer's latest offering - the E600 - set to cord the line.

It is truly elegant and functional - the first phone OS that Microsoft could conceivably take on Ios and Android.

Windows 7 Phone is ace, but sales figures have not been anywhere near what would have been expected, noted contributor.

But since its launch, Windows 7 Phone news has been oddly silent.

The group will be hoping that the upgraded versions of the handset will prove to be more appealing.

So is Windows 7 Phone a flop? Well, yes and no.

For those who choose to get their hands on one, they want to sell phones for cash to help raise money.

If you only look at sales, Windows 7 Phone had an explosive launch.

LG Optimus 7 and HTC Mozart are among those available in the area.

Not many people seem to have a Windows 7 Phone device yet, and a lot of rumors circulating from industry experts said that Microsoft sold only 40,000 phones at launch in November 2010.

It's not exactly big business in the market for smart phones.

In comparison, the original Apple iPhone launched in June 2007 and sold more than 1 million units in the first quarter.

Android was launched in October 2008 and sold nearly 4.5 million mobile phones by the end of the year.

Although Windows 7 Phone has not even been available for a full fourth yet, it does not have a very good start compared to the competition.

There are very few phones available, and some see Windows 7 Phone still in \soft launch, said Victoria Fodale, senior analyst at ABI Research's mobile team, in an interview with tech news daily.

Apps case, we can also take a look at the app stores, which has quickly become one of the almost characteristic of popular phone platforms.

According Fodale, Windows 7 Phone platform over 4000 applications, but Android has well over 100,000 and the iPhone passed a quarter of a million apps several months ago.

Although I am not ready to say that Windows 7 Phone is down for the count, it can certainly look better for Microsoft, said Fodale.

Despite the alarming figures, Microsoft says it remains optimistic.

Microsoft is pleased with the response so far to Windows 7 Phone and look forwards to working with our partners to continue to promote good experience WP7 brings to consumers throughout the vacation series and beyond, said a Microsoft spokesman tech news daily.

(Msnbc.

com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.

) As Microsoft and Fodale indicates, there is still a bit early to call Windows 7 Phone DOA There are many promotions going on over the holidays that will probably increase sales.

And a little perspective helps to make the big picture looks slightly less gloomy.

While the iPhone had amazing press and rabid early adopters from the start, took the Android for a while to become the second most popular operating system for smart phones.

Despite good early sales, Android remained a relatively unknown among consumers to Verizon launched a major Android push sales in late 2009.

The Droid mains with Android phones, along with increased sales Android on other carriers, has helped to bring Android into the public consciousness.

Still in the game in that light, it is impossible to count out Windows 7 Phone after just one full month of sales.

Android will also have to go through a growing process and functions.

Although quite functional when first released, Android still can not quite compare with the iPhone in usability and functionality.

Only the latest versions of Android (2

1, 2.2 and 2.3) is starting to be recognised as true contenders to the iPhone.

Microsoft plans to add similar to many important functions, like copy and paste functionality to Windows 7 Phone over the next year that will make it more comparable with the IOS and Android.

Developers aboard Perhaps one of the most telling sign of Windows 7 Phone potential to grow, is that the developers have not given up on it.

Dave Castelnuovo, co-founder of Bolt Creative, has had great success with Android and iPhone games.

Bolt Creative by God the game was no

A best-selling app in the Apple App Store for nearly a month in March 2009.

But even with a successful business creating iPhone applications, according to Castelnuovo still Windows 7 Phone apps will be worth their company's time.

We develop [apps] Windows 7 Phone because I expect it to be a player in the future and we will have a presence on this platform.

I'm still not sure if it will turn out Android or IOS, but knowing Microsoft, they have the resources and solitaire and it will become a permanent part of the landscape ahead, said Castelnuovo.

Windows 7 Phone developers are experiencing some problems early, Castelnuovo said, because the system is still new, and Microsoft has not ironed out all the wrinkles.

Part of the problem is the tight control Microsoft has tried to keep the Phone how Windows 7 is used, as opposed to open-source treatment of Android.

They are basicly trying to take advantage of multiple hardware manufacturers while maintaining tighter control to combat the fragmentation problems that Android is to have.

It is a \best of both worlds \approach, but at the end of the day, they need to create an exciting device that people need to have, said Castelnuovo.

A gradual growth course, Apple has proved that a living environment app can still grow out of a tightly controlled process of development.

As long as Microsoft can attract enough developers, should Windows 7 Phone finally have a big catalogue of programs, too.

It's just that the task of recruiting developers have not been an easy one, and it may be difficult for the next generation of Windows phones coming.

So far they have got a slow start, but I think ... it can get steam as they begin to produce second-generation Windows 7 Phone devices.

My guess is that it will start eating into the Android market share next year, and it will follow the gradual emergence of Android bit closer than the explosive product launches that made the iPhone what it is today, Castelnuovo.

Of course, even with this optimistic view on Windows 7 Phone's slow start, it does not mean Castelnuovo - or any developer for that matter - is ready to jump ship from the USS iPhone Money Machine.

Our main effort will always be on the iPhone.

It is our home, Castelnuovo.

As always, Microsoft's job is to convince consumers otherwise.

Tiny So Far, According To Web Stats Windows Phone delivering 1/100 the browser impressions of Android

Microsoft says it is too early to talk about Windows Phone sales Phone Windows 7 is of a slow start, it seems.

Microsoft refuses to release sales data on their slick new OS, so we must read the tea leaves elsewhere to get an idea of what's happening.

At least, that is, according to data from Chitika, which serve more than one billion ads monthly over 100 000 sites.

Syndication Pus released this chart shows Windows 7 Phone is barely registers compared to the iPhone and Android.

Pus says there are 110 views and 172 Android iPhone impressions for all the impression from a Windows phone device.

While you can expect a low impression of a nascent platform, it's worse news: that the relationship is stable, said Puss.

Android and iPhone see their highest peaks in use on weekends, suggesting that consumers gravitate towards the units under his private life.

It is a fairly small sample, so that we can not take this as gospel.

Pus therefore recommends that Microsoft Windows phone position 7 as a BlackBerry rival.

However, there seems to be directional drilled accurately.

The problem with it, from those who have looked at the platform, the Windows phone in its current state is definitely a consumer platform, is not suitable, or at least, not as suitable for enterprise use as Android and Ios.

Microsoft has always said it was in the smartphone war for a long time, so we're not going to rush to judgement once, but if things have not improved in 3 months, as it has a real problem.

While GigaOM look at the data negatively, so WMPoweruser positive.

WMP ran a linear regression against Pus's data and found that WP7 market seems to be trending upwards.

Of course WMP name alone implies a certain bias.

As said, it's very early.

WP7 is far behind the other platforms.

The question is whether it may be necessary in time to prevent Thurs the 2nd platforms to run away with the market.

Microsoft Adjusts Windows Phone 7 App Payments, Reporting

A month with a Windows Phone 7by Dave RuddenDecember 08, 2010 5:00 NPT despite an anemic start a library and some questionably placed, game-stop buttons, the first generation of Windows 7 Phone devices boast some quality exclusive and not at least the Xbox Live integration.
If you own a Windows 7 Phone mobile phone and you have not activated Windows 7 Phone transparent lock screen really missed a great time saver.
It is too early to tell, but given time and a few changes, Microsoft's mobile device can prove worthwhile competition to Apple's iPhone.
The creation of a transparent screen lock was first discovered by WP7 developer Keyboardp.
GamePro Score User Score Write your review! Barring a complete miracle, no companies could topple Apple in the mobile gaming market for the next few years.
Given the head start that the iPhone App Store has over the competition, and the bands each have the ultra-popular iTunes Music Store market, market share for both hardware and software that is almost insurmountable.
The only way to even begin making a dent in the market is to specialise in, something that Microsoft does with its Windows 7 Phone devices.
Instead of working on the hardware end, Microsoft has instead handed over to Windows 7 mobile operating system to manufacturers who can make phones that meet certain CPU speed, screen size and button placement specifications.
Because it is not engaged to any particular company, it does a number of manufacturers (like ASUS, Dell, HTC, LG and Samsung) can create Windows phones for many different service providers (including AT \\ u0026amp; T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon).
For this review, I spent a month with T-Mobile exclusive HD7 HTC, one of the larger-screened phones introduced Windows 7 Phone launch.
Ever since Microsoft announced its intentions to tie Windows 7 games in its Xbox 360 games, I've been a bit sceptical about how mobile gaming would be tied to the service.
Fortunately, Microsoft has taken a conservative approach to releasing games and integrate them into Xbox Live.
While hundreds of games and applications are available on the Windows 7 Phone devices, only a few dozen are Xbox Live enabled.
These Microsoft-sanctioned play includes the ability to unlock achievements and add to your Xbox Live profile, Gamerscore, while also allowing the player to log into the online service to send messages to other online members.
While there are few titles that are available in portable and console type - most puzzle games like Hexic and Tetris Rush - nobody has cross-platform games as of yet.
For now, the biggest draw of Windows 7 Phone Gaming additional source of Gamerscore points for hardcore Xbox 360 gamers.
Microsoft measuring official Xbox Live games for Windows 7 Phone devices at about the same rate as the Xbox Live Arcade games, the company can ensure that titles meet a certain level of functionality.
While some of the games can not be large, the development of Microsoft's Achievement system over the past half decade ensured that these mobile phone games will take the same level of commitment to earn Gamerscore points as console-bound games.
In my month with the phone, I was able to devote a few hours to some of the finest platform, but I was not able to achieve 100% completion of any of them.
Although Apple has introduced similar Achievement Tracking Game Centre application, I found that Microsoft is the foundation of the Xbox 360 gave Windows 7's performance more weight.
Although Microsoft has already delivered a handful of quality exclusive to the platform as Hexic Rush and The Harvest, the platform is home to more than a few App Store ports.
While most are done right (and some have been improved because of larger screens on some Windows 7 Phone devices), I come across any games that felt less natural to the Microsoft Mobile system.
In particular, had games of icons in the corner (as Flight Control) response problems at the edges of the screen.
More urgent than the software issues - some that can be addressed with an update - is hardware failure in the design of the first Windows 7 Phone devices.
It is quite difficult to accidentally end an iPhone game, since the power button is the only thing you are in danger of pressing during gaming.
Windows phones, by contrast, has two tactile (power and camera-launch) and two of three touch-screen (home and Web search) buttons that will launch you out of the game if the pressure.
The last two buttons are the most aggravating, as they are located right on the edge of the screen, just millimeters away from the device's touch screen.
Granted, the fact that most titles will only pause when you press one of these buttons reduces pain, but the constant disruption caused by these poorly placed buttons should not have been a problem to begin with.
The unit's non-gaming capabilities, however, is very heavily integrated.
Like the iPhone, call quality is probably usable, but it is built to be more of a multimedia computer.
Windows 7 Phone platform provides plenty of productivity tools, including basic versions of Microsoft Word and Excel, enhanced by an intelligent touch-screen keyboard input is similar to the iPhone.
Internet browsing is done with a modified version of Internet Explorer (which is a bit clunkier than iPhone's Safari browser).
The music and video playback is done via Microsoft's Zune software, which, while unorthodox in terms of UI, has a pretty awesome recommendation algorithm.
Speaking of UI, employs every facet of your phone from your e-mails to the Foursquare Netflix to a corresponding column-based design ethic that shows a large part of each programme side by side on top of the page.
Using Twitter as an example, you can scroll through the feed by running your finger up and down the screen, and then jump to your direct message with some side swipes.
The unified design really works wonders, but more than once misread the phone a bit skewed vertical sweep as a reason for changing columns.
While I would definitely recommend one of the Windows 7 Phone devices to fans of the Xbox 360, the fact remains that the software and app libraries are anemic compared to iPhone.
Where Windows 7 is able to make some headway with a unified user interface and a dedicated library of games that manage to make mobile gaming a bit more rewarding.
If the forthcoming firmware updates can make touch screen a bit more forgiving, and the next generation of phones can eliminate the minefield of game break, I extend the recommendation outside of the die-hard Xbox fans.
Pros: Xbox Live Achievement integration make mobile game means a little more, some of the phone's best games Windows 7 exclusive, the unified interface makes it much less jarring to jump between applications.
Cons: Extremely poorly placed buttons will start from the desired program on many occasions, software and games libraries lack the depth of the iPhone, any iPhone ports will not recognise your finger readings also on this platform.
