Microsoft VP apologizes for Windows Phone missteps

I'm not quite sure what's going on over at Microsoft regarding Windows 7 Phone updates, but according to comments on the developer site, they may not have a clue either. The updates have been slow, customers have been upset and it seems that Microsoft is not hurrying up the process somewhat. Simple comments on most users get the update from February, have been found untrue, and that's the reason for the apology at this point. The update adds copy and paste features, performance updates and improvements to the market place for buying apps. In the meantime, while all related to the updates is to prevent Note Gates, they posted a list of events, allowing users to see when the updates are expected in the United States and international markets.
The last update was delayed just to test the update process, which seemed to be fine minus the Samsung phones, telephones and prepare for future updates. Honestly, I do not think Microsoft will be able to keep pace with the changes in the smartphone business long enough to be competitive. What do you think?.

The update will be either in a testing, planning, or supply phase.
Testing means the software update is undergoing carrier networks and quality tests.

Microsoft said the planning phase usually lasts about 10 days, while the supply scene could take several weeks since updates are usually delivered to customers in batches.
So what phone will see the update first? According to the site, no American Windows 7 Phone device in the mode of delivery date. Dell Venue Pro and HTC HD7 is in planning mode, but surround and HTC, LG Quantum and Samsung Focus is still in test mode. The Arrive HTC, Sprint first Windows 7 Phone device, is also on the list, but says not applicable since the smartphone was update at launch. Microsoft began rolling out its Windows 7 Phone update on Wednesday to Windows 7 Phone devices that are not tied to a specific operator. When the update hits the phone, it will display a notice with instructions on how to install. We will provide updates in groups, ramping up gradually to ensure that the process is as smooth as possible. (And so far, copy and paste the update goes smoothly), Microsoft said in a blog post.
The case resulted in Microsoft pushes this cut and paste the update to the end of March.
In addition to cut and paste, this latest update promises faster apps and games, better search market, improved market stability, market experience and other improvements, easier access and storage options for Wi-Fi settings, Facebook integration, and more.

Nokia confuses developers with Symbian roadmap

Nokia confuses developers with Symbian roadmap GalleryBy Stewart MitchellPosted March 28, 2011 at 12:25 for Symbian developers are confused over the future of the platform after mixed messages from Nokia.
Nokia has issued a letter to the developers that describe the future of Symbian and Windows 7 Phone - and it seems the Finnish firm is a long way from being settled on a strategy.
Nokia has lately signed a pact with Microsoft, agreed to make Windows 7 Phone their preferred platform as it tried to stem the declining market share.
Symbian platform will keep getting the same handset planned for 2011 and 2012, which is what Nokia calls \its transition period \\ u0026quot;.
Symbian developers have since been left wondering what would become of their platform if Nokia pulled the plug, but an open letter to the Symbian community has raised as many questions as it answered.
That transition is defined later in the letter that the point where Nokia is looking to get as many customers on Windows 7 Phone as possible: Our intention is that when users come to the end of the natural life cycle of their Symbian device they want to make it change to Windows phone a Nokia device and then it would not be in our interest to weaken the Nokia smartphone experience.
In recent weeks we have been evaluating our Symbian roadmap and now feel that we should have a strong portfolio of new products in our transition period, 2011 and 2012, said vise president Purnima Kochikar in the letter.
Thurs support opera has also been very supportive of their commitment to help us to continue to sell and support Symbian devices, while we make the transition to Windows Phone.
But Nokia complicated matters by admitting that it did not want to put the feature phone market, Nokia said it sold a million phones a day, especially in emerging markets.
The lights are dimmingBut the writing is clearly written on the wall for Symbian - Nokia's plan is just to push it in markets where there are already strong (ie, China, Turkey, Russia, etc) and also while it is working to get Windows 7 Phone ready for areas where there is still inconsistent: why some markets will play a more significant role in selling the 150 million Symbian devices than others, and we will sell the devices long after Windows phone devices from Nokia has already begun to emerge in other markets .
The company says it will continue to support Symbian for the foreseeable future, especially considering that WP7 was not ready for all the emerging markets where it sells many of those phones.
That is why we can not give you the date on which Symbian is no longer supported.
I've been asked many times how long we will support the Symbian and many of you feel we have been avoiding the question, said Kochikar.
The full letter is published here if you want to read all about Nokia's Symbian and promises of the QT development platform - if you're a die-hard Symbian fan, we should warn you it will not fill you with hope, massive ...
There are no simple answers.
From the programmer.
Windows phone will not have any language and location of all abilities from day one.
Some markets will play a more significant role in selling Symbian devices than others, and we will sell units long after Windows phone devices from Nokia has already begun to emerge in other markets.
If that's your plan, and if you forget Europe so sorry, but I see no reason to continue development for Nokia devices anymore, posted miksuh.

Nokia to sell Symbian smartphones 'long after' Windows Phone appears

After the formal announcement of a partnership with Microsoft for Windows 7 Phone operating system, many experts believed that Nokia will stop developing for the Symbian operating system, the company's own operating system. It may be mentioned here that Nokia is the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer and as a result, Symbian has a large market share. But lately the operating system has shown negative growth as it has failed to compete with competitors such as Android and IOS that led to the cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft Windows 7 Phone operating system. Some sources in the company has confirmed that the manufacturer will roll out some new Symbian devices in recent future. Also it is believed when devices with Windows 7 Phone OS is clear that the company will continue with both operating systems.
In recent weeks we have been evaluating our Symbian roadmap and now feel that we should have a strong portfolio of new products in our transition period - ie 2011 and 2012.They will also include improvements in hardware performance GHz + processing capabilities and faster graphics speeds.

Nokia unveils rebranding, ditches Nokia Sans font in favour of pure look

Nokia has decided that a new font is just the ticket to go along with a big think about the company, with Nokia Pure typeface billed as bringing \beauty in the upper user \\ u0026quot;.
Out with the old and in with the new over at Nokia HQ.
Just in case you thought a great partnership with Microsoft on Windows 7 and a Phone \redeployment \Symbian OS was not enough, Nokia has gone one further and given us a new font.
It is not just Symbian going through the wringer that the Finnish mobile giants gear up for the launch of its first Windows 7 Phone device, but also writings as well.
For a brand like Nokia, which wants to reinvent and innovate, set the font literally tone, the company explained in a blog.
Apparently alerted an era of beauty in the top convenience, the Nokia phones, the script has been designed by Bruno Maag and called Nokia Pure.

Windows Phone 7 update problem: It's Microsoft, not the carriers

Microsoft rolls out its first major software update to its Windows 7 Phone operating system.
With customers unhappy at the pace that Microsoft has delivered a promised Windows 7 Phone update, the software maker offers its apologies.
Microsoft had planned for Windows 7 Phone service for the first two weeks of March.
In comments posted on the Microsoft web site developer, lamented Joe Belfiore both the inertia of the update and for earlier comments that indicated that Microsoft was further along with the update than it actually was.
The delay due to technical problems with a minor update to the operating system (OS) in February, which resulted in Microsoft pulls Windows 7 Phone service on Samsung devices.
First was I wrong when I said \\ u0026quot, most people have gotten in February update'Belfore said in the posting on Microsoft's Channel 9 site.
The update contains copy and paste functions and improved Marketplace search.
There are many of you who have not yet received it, and I do not blame you for speaking up and pointing out my mistakes.
It will be available in several batches, to insure that the process is as smooth as possible, Microsoft.
The update provides copy and paste functions, along with performance updates and improvements to the Market Place to buy apps.
In a blog post, said Eric Hautala, general manager of customer experience engineering at Microsoft, the update will be available for open market [units without a specific mobile operator] Phones Windows first, before being rolled out to all users.
Belfiore and others in Redmond have been talking about the update in the past tense, but many customers have yet to get it.
In the next phase of the development process, we will begin to make the update available to a wider range of customers.
Redmond has a timetable for when to expect the update in the U.S. and in international markets. The update is already on some new phones, including HTC Arrive, the first Windows 7 Phone model from Sprint. In addition to copy and paste support, the so-called NoDo update the first version of Windows phone software which supports CDMA networks such as Sprint and Verizon. AT&T is also adding to the HTC HD7S phone, which will also run the new version of the software. This is not the first stumble Microsoft has had with regard to update Windows 7 Phone. The company had to delay the deployment of a previous update after the process caused problems on some Samsung phones. The purpose of the update was just to test the update process and prepare for future updates. The copy and paste the update has been delayed a bit, until the end of March.
Microsoft Where is the update my phone? Web site helps users find out when the devices are likely to be updated.
At Mobile World Parliament in February, Microsoft said that it would have a broader update later this year that has improved surfing, multitasking and integrated Twitter support.
Much like when you buy a PC online, you will see when the patch is tested and packaged, as it is about to send, and when it left the warehouse.
Here is the full text of Belfiore comments.
We will update the site once a week with the latest changes in status, added Hautala.
Some new Windows phone devices already installed the update.
Instructions for installing the update is available here.

[How To] Make Windows Phone 7 market work in unsupported regions

Were you in for a rude shock when you gotten your new Windows 7 Phone only to be met by renting market is not supported in your region message? Zune Market place, supported in a handful of countries, much less than the number of countries where Windows 7 Phone is available. It is a very simple, but for some it can be very inconvenient, work around for this. When the phone for the first time, it asks for live ID. This is where the problem lies. If you live ID has some other countries that are stored in it, the market wont work. It's that simple. The solution is to create a new Live ID and select the country for the United States. Then the phone chose the U.S. as the region. Voila! You can now get access to the market. You will not be able to purchase any paid applications though, unless you have a credit card that works internationally. Some users have reported their credit card does not work. Since I do not own one I can not say for sure.
S Just change the country in the existing live account has not worked for many users.
But since you can add more live IDs to your Windows phone, you can still use the old ID and use the newer one as a primary one for the market.

Windows Phone 7 update brings copy and paste

Microsoft may have the smallest market share since Android, RIM and IOS, but that does not have the latest crop of Windows 7 Phone phones are completely false. They only accommodate a certain type userthe diehard Microsoft maniac. Unlike Android, which is able to run different interface architectures such as HTC and Motorola Sense MOTOBLUR, chairs Windows 7 Phone family in a uniform interface experienceanimated hubs. If you are hooked on the Windows Live ecosystem, own a Zune or Xbox, or existed only on PC my whole life, you'll want to cheque out our Top 5 Windows 7 Phone handsets countdown. Death Was the iPhone parade legit? Are these really the phones to save us from our phones? Let's find out. # 5 HTC ArriveSprint highly anticipated Windows 7 Phone phone similar to LG's Quantum with slide-out QWERTY keyboard. But this keyboard angles up for ergonomic practice.
Now you can call me a page view, troll, since I know that, over the headline will jump my numbers into the millions.
The phone also packs in a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and the ability to shoot 720p HD video.
Yes, everyone needs to know that Microsoft is releasing a major update to Windows 7 Phone.
Although the camera quality was not up to snuff, exhibited HTC Arrive great call quality and battery life.
I guess this is the dozen or so users to flock to their browsers to find out more.
And then, of course, it is the love-it-or-hate-it Windows 7 OS Phone with some hubs to compress all of our social, entertainment and productivity drives in separate stations.
Hi-yo! Then I met the news run down sheets after storey after story about the update to Windows 7 Phone.
The HTC Arrival (Full Review) is a great all-around phone, but let's see what else is on the list.
Apparently, some PR person was able to do its job well (I guess her in this formula), and lots of news, blogs and other outlets picked up on this important information, and are now parroting it to the public.
# 4 Samsung FocusThe first AT&T-unit was Samsung Focus (Full Review), and it is the easiest.
Apple does not even make this kind of announcement and push it.
You will not find any trick slide-out QWERTY or other tech-friendly delights you read about in the following sections.
So where was the PR department when Microsoft tried to sell the new phone OS? It's pretty pathetic when your only good news is a software update.
Instead, Samsung Focuses on form factor and a sexy 4-inch AMOLED screen Super, which makes the phone display the best of this lot.
What else is Microsoft doing? Let me look at the rundown.
Microsoft Office integration, Hotmail, Windows Live accounts, and everything else that stems from Master Gates'mastermind is all part of the package too. # 3 HTC SurroundThe definitive black sheep of the bunch is the HTC Surround (Full Review) for AT&Take the phone that slides, but in no way have you ever seen before. Rather than reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, HTC Surround succeed in Baring a slide-out speakers with Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancements. Shazam! We had such a blast with Surround that we continued to be significantly removed from our local mall to dance to music on the speaker system. HTC Surround is LOUD! The phone also features a 3.8-inch WVGA display and 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video. Toss in superior call quality to all the other phones, and an impressive battery life, and HTC Surround is one of the more rockin 'Windows 7 Phone phones out there. 123 Party! # 2 HTC HD7T-Mobile's only crack at Windows 7 Phone ecosystem is quite kind.
I am also seeing the use of the new buzz-word of the month: personal cloud.
Picking up where it left off of HD2 HTC, HTC HD7 flaunts a massive 4.3-inch screen with 16 million colors, Dolby Mobile sound, and a tripod. A 5-megapixel camera with 720p and dual LED flash leeches on the back of the phone, and we get 16 GB embedded NAND flash memory to store all those videos. HTC HD7 is Microsoft's answer to HTC and Motorola EVO 4G Droid X, but it lacks a few features that the other giants have, as HDMI, Android Market, Android OS. But it is a Windows Phone 7 phone and that HTC did a nice job with the HTC HD7. # 1 LG QuantumIn our extensive experience, we see a Whitman's Sampler of phones. Some are absolute rubbish, and a few are top-notch examples of what a phone should be. LG has entered the smart phone arena with some of the best designed phones on the market, and LG Quantum of AT&T is one of them. Our # 1 Windows 7 Phone phone finds its way to the top because of its quality design and overall versatility.
When I was a personal cloud was looming stench you smell around someone who exaggerated the patchouli oil.
The LG Quantum (Full Review) can not have bells or whistles Surround HTC HTC HD7, but it is the most robust Windows 7 Phone phone in our eyes.
Hi-yo! Now, apparently, Microsoft, among other things, is to promote the idea of \u200b\u200ba personal cloud, which I guess is a hard disc in the sky that can be used here and there as needed.
Some people use the capacity of their Gmail letterbox for the same.
I'm sure someone with a free Gmail account, a free Hotmail account and a free Yahoo account has more than enough line capacity to take care of these cloud needs.
Add to that a free WordPress.com and Blogger.com accounts, and you can store all sorts of things within these structures.
It is more than a couple of photo service where you can back up photos as well.
Ok, so here's a product idea for some enterprising entrepreneur.
I would do it if I could.
The cool little quick (Nimble.com) product that centralizes all your social media has little to do this, but not with the personal cloud in mind.
Design a programme that takes the whole sky-all e-mail, photos, and anything else you store online and create a virtual hard drive to make it look like a local drive.
You can store and retrieve the same way as you would from the C: Drive, but it would all be virtualised and the data would be sent to-and-forth of various cloud services, which would all now works as mere storage via various mechanisms, such as storage files as e-mail attachments.
The cost will be the basic price of the software package rather than a ridiculous, recurring monthly fee.
Some small businesses will buy into this Malarkey, but the isolated user generally will not. But I think Microsoft is getting used to these small audiences for some of their less stellar ideas. After all, it is to spend big money to promote an easy upgrade for Windows 7 phone, right? It might as well do to have a small audience an enduring theme. MSFT Cloud ... Phone meeting 7.More John C.

Microsoft rolls out Bing mobile updates for IOS and Android users

Search OPERATOR Microsoft has revealed large patches of Bing mobile website, although Windows 7 Phone (WP7) users must wait to see the benefits.
Microsoft Wednesday rolled out some updates to the Bing for Mobile browser service including real-time public transport updates for selected cities and the inclusion of the apps in results for searches on the iPhone.
Microsoft says that updates to Bing for mobile phones is better and faster image search, real-time transit information and use and HTML5 to do it.
Most of the updates available for iPhone and Android users, but not Microsoft's own Windows 7 Phone customers.
The only problem is, the version of Internet Explorer included with WP7 not support HTML5, then just IOS Android and smartphones can use the latest version of Bing mobile.
That's because services are built with HTML 5, as Windows 7 Phone does not support yet.
With this overhaul, Microsoft is trying to make Bing a portal for smartphone users, not only search, but information, weather, shopping tips, film information and an application search facility.
The company has promised an update later this year that will include an HTML 5 browser for Windows 7 Phone devices.
Although Google is trying to offer many of these functions with different programs, Microsoft has decided to put it all in one place.
As part of Bing update, users visiting m.bing.com click on directions and on the bus icon to see how to take the bus or other public transport to the destination.
After all, it would be reasonable to expect that the latest updates to Bing mobile will be available for users of Microsoft's operating system.
In addition, users will be able to click on the bus round for the real-time information on when a bus arrives.
Instead, the best Bing experience to be had only on smart phones that do not run WP7.The weaknesses in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser on WP7 was shown yesterday when Microsoft suggested that Web developers should use a \if statement \to download CSS files to insure sites display properly on WP7 devices.
The real-time data is available for Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Microsoft has said it will release Internet Explorer 9 for WP7 later this year.
Google Maps on the iPhone displays the transport routes, but not necessarily real-time information about buses.
Until then, it recommends that users should not worry, as these updates will work well at the time.
When using the Bing to search, iPhone users can now get the results for the relevant iPhone apps in addition to the regular search results.
μ.
This is a great way to discover new fluke great programs, wrote Andy Chu, director of product management for Bing for Mobile, in a blog mail about the updates.
Microsoft has also made Image Search faster and smoother, and re-organized shopping feature Bing mobile browser app, he said.
When you search for movies, users will now find the results organised by time and the nearest theater, in addition to reviews, trailers and other information.
In addition, he said that when users enter a city name in the search box on the weather, the weather that the city look even before they finish writing the name.
Chu wrote that the updates were released today, but they do not seem to be yet available everywhere.

HTC HD7S: Windows Phone 7 With a Huge Screen (Video)

HTC's flagship Windows 7 Phone handsets, the HD7 has just been robbed at CTIA 2011 in Florida of a new model with a few incremental differences.
Two new Windows 7 Phone handsets for AT&T and Sprint, are on display this week at the CTIA conference in Orlando.
HTC HD7S launching soon in the UK, filled with a new screen and some enhanced features.
Both arrive with the latest version of Microsoft's mobile operating system, which includes new features such as copy / paste text.
The biggest difference between the HD7 and HD7S is that the new display.
Watch videos from CTIAThe firmware update for existing Windows phone handsets now being rolled out to selected customers in Europe, and will be extended gradually to other, according to Microsoft.
The Super LCD promises brighter, sharper results, in spite of the same size as the 4.3-inch can be found in the original HD7.
Among the new features in Windows 7 Phone is copy / paste, faster loading application, and an improved search for the online Zune Phone Windows Marketplace: queries can now return results only programs, or music, or games instead of all three together .
The second change is that the copy and paste functionality - sorely missing from the Windows 7 Phone at launch - will be on HD7S right out of the box.
AT&T announced HTC HD7S, which is a variant of the existing HD7 Windows phone handsets previously available abroad and from T-Mobile USA.
Elsewhere the specs are the same: it's still a 1 GHz processor, a 5-Meg camera and 16 GB of storage.
The main difference is the improved display.
Interested? Or does HTC have to do more than just add the letter \S \on the phone name to get your attention? Let us know at T3 Twitter feed.
The original HD7 used a standard thin film transistor (TFT) LCD screen.
It will be AT&T's largest screen Windows phone device: a 4.3-inch screen with a 800 x 480 pixel WVGA resolution.
The HD7S has a 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash for photos and HD video.
It packs 16 GB of internal memory.
As with other first-generation Windows phones, Qualcomm has HD7S's 1-GHz Snapdragon single-core processor.
The phone comes with AT&T's U-verse mobile app, which lets customers U-verse media subscription service manage DVR recordings, browse TV listings, and download and watch TV programs.

IDC claims that Windows Phone 7 is doing OK

Beancounters at IDC, down under, have come to the conclusion that the Microsoft'sWindows Phone 7-operating system makes it pretty good.
HTC's new HD7 will go on sale at Telstra shops from March 29 Microsoft release Windows 7 Phone in Australia review: Windows Phone 7Aussie launch plagued by supply issue Microsoft has fought back from the dead in smartphones with Windows 7 Phone have a stronger start than did Google's Android, according to analyst firm IDC Australia. IDC, which tracks mobile phone sales on a quarterly basis, today announces its results for the 4th quarter last year. Windows 7 Phone, which went on sale 20 October, snagged a 4.4 percent share in the quarter. Ad: Storey continues belowNokia's Symbian maintained first place with a 32.2 percent share, followed by Apple's IOS (30.3 percent) and Android (25 percent). The above figures are only for smartphones, which now make up almost two thirds of mobile phone shipments.
Despite the fact that Microsoft has been cagey about the number of phones running its operating system, which is a bad sign, IDC sees a rosy future for it.
Given all that to see a 4.4 percent share in the quarter launch is a very promising start.
In a report, IDC said that Windows 7 Phone had a stronger start than Google'sAndroid.
Novosel noted that Google's Android platform took 18 months to make a serious impact on the market.
By tracking the mobile phone sales on a quarterly basis, IDC said that Windows 7 Phone, which went on sale 20 October, snagged a 4.4 percent share in the quarter.
So WP7 has certainly had a stronger start than Android did, even if it comes into the market with a much more competitive than when the Android launch, he said.
Nokia'sSymbian maintained first place with a 32.2 percent share, followed by Apple'SiO with 30.3 per cent and Android by a quarter of the market.
But Novosel mainains still that Android will be the number one platform for smart phones before the middle of this, possibly as early as the end of this month.
IDC telecommunications analyst Mark Novosel said WP7 has had a strong start, pointed out, given the short time it has been in the market and the strong growth from Android, Apple, and a large increase in Symbian Q4.He that a 4.4 percent stake in launch quarter was a very promising start.
The latest handsets WP7, the HTC HD7, launched yesterday and will be available March 29 exclusively on Telstra's network.
WP7 has certainly had a stronger start than Android did, even if it comes into the market with a much more competitive than when launched Android, said Novosel.
The device, which will sell for $ 768 directly, has a large 4.3-inch screen and a flipout stand for convenient video viewing.
There will still be Android which is the market possibly as early as the end of this month.
Novosel said he believed that the HD7 was a very clever device, and he particlarly liked the big screen.
Viewing Novosel comments it is fairly clear that he is a WP7 user.
When they release the update and bring multitasking to the platform, it will take a whole new dimension.
He said the one thing I particularly like the WP7 is the e-experience.
One thing I particularly like the WP7's e-mail experience - it's very intuitive, for exampe to select multiple messages, you just turn left on the e-mail, and it brings up multiple select option, e-mail is beautiful.
Novosel said it is very intuitive, to select several messages you can only turn left on the e-mail, and it brings up multiple select option, e-mail is displayed nicely.
One thing we've noticed about smart phones is the need for users to evangelize their choice.
But he could be right.
With Vole's agreement with Nokia all signed and sealed, and the rubber trunk maker moving away from Symbian, is it too early to write Microsoft off.
